America has such a depth of (natural) resources that it's economically possible to try 10,000 times and get it wrong - to paraphrase one of their own), yet still come out, eventually, with a working solution.
The only way America seems successful is that it has previously spent so much on getting things wrong - but those wrongs rarely get a mention.

yes, of course. its broken. the idea that you can buy automatic weapons with minimum or no checks is crazy. and it doesnt only affect the US, it kills thousands of people in central and south america who would otherwise be alive were it not for the easy importation of those guns from the US.
No-one, again, is questioning american civilisation. the Feds arent coming for you, nor are the Brits.

The US does however have a broken political system. It's not designed for modern politics. The constitution which served it so well for a couple of centuries is starting to look like a millstone.

I started off my career working at a small local newspaper in a wealthy town around London, occasionally I'd have to go out and do Voxpops - asking people what was going on here or there.
The number that couldn't string a coherent sentence together was startling.
